MEXICO CITY, August 22, 2022 – The sixth edition of the Latin America Summit, the annual event organized by Brazilian payments fintech EBANX will be held for the first time outside of Brazil in Mexico City from September 12-15. The four-day summit will provide a deep immersion and understanding of the business and digital payments landscape in emerging markets, including discussions on the digital revolution that is emerging in LatAm and other regions related to online retail, digital gaming, and streaming entertainment for consumers, in addition to LatAm companies’ increasing use of cloud computing, SaaS, and other B2B services.
Senior executives from world-renowned digital companies such as Adobe, ByteDance (TikTok), Canva, Disney+, Electronic Arts, Garena, Samsung, Spotify and Uber are among those confirmed to participate in this year’s summit. Topics of discussion will include the cutting edge of current payment technologies and what's to come, new business opportunities, the rise of more digitally connected people and alternative payment methods that already account for about 30 percent of the total volume of digital commerce in LatAm (per EBANX’s Beyond Borders 2021-2022), the popularity of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) solutions, real-time payments such as Pix in Brazil, and the Web 3.0 payment options on the horizon.
“The last two years of the pandemic have accelerated the process of digitization and financial inclusion in Latin America. Local statistics in countries like Brazil, Mexico and Colombia show that there are, in fact, more people with access to financial services, who are not necessarily connected to traditional banking,” said João Del Valle, co-founder and CEO of EBANX. “During the EBANX Latin America Summit, we will seek to rethink the growth prospects of the market to boost the sector but, above all, to improve the lives of all people in emerging countries. Having the presence of so many specialists and representatives of the digital market fills us with confidence in the prosperity of the region.”
Content and connections at the Latin America Summit 2022
One of the first moments of the event will invite everyone to reflect on Latin American society. Rigoberta Menchú, Guatemalan Nobel Peace Prize laureate, human rights activist, and prominent defender of indigenous rights, will share her vision on ethnic-cultural reconciliation in Latin America.
During the event, the most relevant business experts in the sector will share their vision, experience and knowledge – from the new regulatory frameworks and real-time payments to the digital revolution that drives the technology ecosystem and online commerce in LatAm – which is expected to grow 31 percent a year through 2025, according to the Beyond Borders 2022 Special Edition, an acceleration that is only comparable to Asian markets.
"We see a two-way movement in Latin America: financial inclusion thanks to digital acceleration, and more people entering the digital world thanks to new financial products. Technologies and payment solutions created here are becoming benchmarks for the world, even for more consolidated economies, and they are forming a solid foundation for the evolution of the LatAm digital market,” said Paula Bellizia, President of Global Payments at EBANX.
Kiki Del Valle, Executive Vice President, Market Development for Mastercard Latin America and the Caribbean, will be among the renowned panelists who will participate during the EBANX Latin America Summit. Del Valle, who leads Mastercard's digital business and innovation strategies, will discuss the company's major projects based on consumer behavior and the needs of merchants in Latin America, which have led Mastercard to focus on products and financial solutions based on crypto and blockchain, BNPL, multi-rail capabilities and digital security.
With more than 38 million active users, Mercado Pago, the financial arm of the Latin American e-commerce giant Mercado Libre, will be present at the EBANX Latin America Summit. Pedro Rivas, general manager of Mercado Pago in Mexico, will discuss the path traveled by the company to consolidate itself as one of the largest players in digital consumption and payments in Latin America. Operating with credit, insurance and investments, Mercado Pago reported a jump of 83.9 percent in the total volume of payments made through its platform in the second quarter of this year, totaling USD 30.2 billion processed. Considering Brazil, its largest market, the fintech company accounts for 48 percent of Mercado Libre's revenue.
Also confirmed as keynotes at the summit are three other leading companies that are revolutionizing the payments industry, financial services, and the digital market in Latin America: Nubank, Rappi and Ualá.
Founded in Brazil in 2013, the financial services digital platform Nubank has around 60 million customers from its country of origin and also in Mexico and Colombia, where it expanded in 2019 and 2020 respectively. The technology company Rappi, which operates across multiple LatAm countries, is betting on a super app strategy to expand its business beyond delivery in Latin America, with branches in the fintech sector and in online payment solutions via Paga con Rappi, which has been growing rapidly. In turn, the Argentine unicorn Ualá has been present in Mexico since 2020, in addition to Colombia and its country of origin. With more than four million cards issued in Argentina alone, the technology company will participate in the event to talk about the connection between digital wallets, financial inclusion, and recurring payments.
Carlos Eduardo Brandt, deputy director at the Competition and Financial Market Structure Department of the Central Bank of Brazil, takes the stage of the summit to detail the revolution in Brazil of Pix, the country's instant payment system. As the leader of the implementation process and of the entire system’s evolution agenda, Brandt will share a bit of behind the scenes and the characteristics that made Pix a phenomenon. It is currently used by more than half of the Brazilian population in less than two years since its launch. For digital commerce, the volume of Pix payments is expected to grow 95 percent per year until 2024, when it will represent 10 percent of the total volume of online purchases in Brazil, according to projections by Americas Market Intelligence (AMI) in a special edition of the annual Beyond Borders study by EBANX.
EBANX’s Paula Bellizia stressed the importance of the connections that companies can make between members of this sector: “The Latin America Summit has become the essential event on business and payments from Latin America to the world, and from the world to emerging markets. Every year we bring together some of the biggest experts in the market to talk about the opportunities for global tech companies expanding into emerging markets, and especially to discuss how payments contribute to business growth,” she said.
